Agilent’s Ultimate Union has lower dead volume than other metal column connector designs. The figure above demonstrates the design differences. The seal is made at the contact of the ferrule (light blue) and the metal fitting (green). The amount of dead or unswept volume in the Ultimate Union is limited to a very small space near the tip of the column which is easily flushed by gas flow to minimize sample tailing. The other design allows the sample to migrate into long, un-swept cracks and crevices causing peak tailing.
